oringinal source is from one of the dead books...I've been checking out band photos and in early 83 he's clearly on the Modulus 6 and there are very common pics from Berkely May 82 that show him on the alembic, still looking for band pics from Frost October 82 where he's still on the Alembic 4 string...he's on the six for the Etta James shows

Phil played a G&L L2000e for those Frost and Berkeley dates and for much of 1982. (Maybe for some of 1981, too, after he abandoned the Doug Irwin bass.)

good information...I know that by 1981 or so 6 string basses had started to become more viable instruments...apparently Lesh had tried one that weighed over 50 pounds at some point (not on stage)before he settled into the Modulus...
